A new $79 Kindle made its way into our home on my son’s birthday. The device caused me to revisit Project Gutenberg.
The combination of ebook and ebrary is amazing. In just a few minutes my son’s empty Kindle was filled with classic books:
The Velveteen Rabbit
The Boy Scouts Book of Stories
The Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories
A Christmas Carol
The 1911 Boy Scout Handbook
Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales
and Canoeing in the Wilderness
Michael Hart founded Project Gutenberg in 1977 with the digitization of the Declaration of Independence. The goal was to provide a digital resource with the goal of 10,000 titles. In 2003, 10,000 titles were available on-live and on CD. By 2007, the number of titles increased to 39,000+ titles. Michael Hart passed in 2011, but the website continues to make more titles available in as many formats as possible.
What a wonderful project and a excellent addition to a great product like Kindle.
